A tremendously famous Texan with distinct ties to the Brazos Valley:

1850s Ashbel Smith, a medical doctor from Connecticut, became an outstanding Texas state leader who made valuable contributes to Texas in the areas of politics, diplomacy, agriculture and ranching, finance transportation, and immigration. He also helped negotiate the recognition of the independence of Texas from Mexico and championed public education for blacks and women, and helped establish what has become Prairie View A&M.
