Simmons-Smith House

Located at the corner of Haswell and 32nd Street in the East Side Historic District, the Simmons-Smith house was built by the Texas State Forester in 1932. A fact of particular interest is that the house is constructed of bricks salvaged from the Villa Maria Convent, which had moved to Bryan from Galveston after the 1900 hurricane, and was demolished around 1930. Some bricks still bear the names of students at the Catholic girls school, written in pencil. One such message, signed "The Allen Boys," would seem to be the relic of some long forgotten raid mounted by boys from the Allen Academy.
